Keep Cool and Protected When the Weather Gets Wild
1. Turn Off Your AC During Intense Storms
We know, we know… it’s hot. But if a severe thunderstorm is headed your way, it’s best to shut your system off temporarily. Power surges from lightning strikes or sudden outages can damage your AC’s compressor or circuit board. Even with surge protectors, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Pro Tip: Turn off your AC at the thermostat and circuit breaker if the storm looks intense.
2. Install a Surge Protector
Power surges can fry your AC’s electrical components in a blink. Whole-home surge protectors or dedicated surge protection for your HVAC system can save you thousands in repair or replacement costs.
If you don’t have one, give us a call—we can help get you set up.
3. Secure the Outdoor Unit
High winds and flying debris? Not a great combo for your outside AC unit. Clear away any loose items in your yard, trim overhanging branches, and make sure the unit is level and secure on its base.
Bonus Tip: After the storm, check your unit for any visible damage before turning it back on.
4. Avoid Running the AC During a Power Outage
If the power goes out, leave your AC off until electricity is fully restored. Turning it on too soon during a voltage drop can cause serious strain to the system.
Wait a few minutes after the power returns, then slowly bring your system back online by turning it on at the thermostat.
5. Schedule a Post-Storm Checkup
If your area experienced a rough storm and you're noticing strange noises, warm air, or reduced airflow, it’s a good idea to schedule an inspection. Our techs will make sure everything is in top shape and catch any issues before they get worse.
